2014 Benefiting Sponsors
We are excited to announce the 2014 Cameron Carico Memorial Classic will benefit Orchard Place and the Youth Emergency Services and Shelter of Iowa.
Our first is Orchard Place. Orchard Place serves nearly 80 schools and 11 school districts through their School Based Therapy program. They served 2,211 children and youth through the program this past year alone, and the number of schools involved grows every year.
CC+10’s continued support is used to purchase books and therapeutic supplies specific to the middle school and high school age groups served by Orchard Place’s School Based Therapy program. This includes helping fill the therapists’ therapy closet. The therapy closet is a ‘library’ of different assistive tools that therapists can sign out for use in their respective schools.
Therapeutic supplies included multiple books specific to issues most frequently dealt with in middle schools and high schools, such as information on LGBTQ youth, bullying, suicide, cutting, etc. Therapeutic games that secondary school students might find helpful are also funded from CC+10 contributions.
In addition, CC+10 supports training for EMDR, (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) an evidenced-based practice that works well not only with clients who have a trauma history but with other types of issues as well. EMDR is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR, people can experience the benefits of therapy that once took years to make a difference.
We would like to thank Jan Abendroth, a School Based Therapy Supervisor, and Nancy Bobo Vice President of Development, for providing insight into Orchard Place’s services. More information can be found at www.orchardplace.org and at the foundation’s youtube video.
Our second beneficiary selected is YESS - Youth Emergency Services and Shelter. Every night, YESS provides shelter for up to 56 children (newborn to age 17). More than 1,000 children annually are provided a safe, structured and supervised environment. The children are also provided a place to sleep, meals to eat, medical care through an onsite clinic, and access to education.
YESS provides counseling and therapeutic services in individual, group and family settings that provide healing and hope for trauma-impacted children and their families. Due to the nature of the trauma the children have endured, it has left significant emotional scaring. The children and teens display higher levels of mental health disorders including suicidal ideation, post-traumatic stress disorder, attachment disorders and more. Some services include musical, art and drama based therapy. Iowa’s Child Welfare, Juvenile Justice and Mental Health Systems continue to be strained by budget setbacks. The implementation of the Affordable Health Care Act and a strained Medicaid program will continue to hinder traditional services for children and families.
YESS is currently operating at capacity. For every child who stays at YESS, one is turned away. All available space in their 38,000-square-foot facility is being used to provide shelter and therapeutic clinical services. The average number of nights of stay has nearly doubled in recent years. Regrettably, these issues prohibit YESS from caring for all children in need. Their waiting list continues to grow longer. Currently YESS is expanding the facility by 18,000-square-feet to provide 32 additional bedrooms to be completed in 2015.

The second beneficiary is the Polk County Suicide Prevention Coalition. The PCSPC teamed up with Polk County Crisis and Advocacy to use our donation to help families immediately after a suicide. The Advocacy group runs the suicide bereavement support group and regularly works with families where there has been a suicide, immediately after the death. Lots of times, there are some short-term, urgent needs that the family can’t meet, such as:·Overnight stay in a hotel until other family members arrive (if they are unable to stay in the home due to the nature of death, or it’s emotionally unbearable). Home cleanup so the family can return to the home, if that is required due to the nature of death (Rare, but occasional) need for assistance for funeral expenses, or transporting the deceased back home for burial.
